So: Grawl, Hylek, Ogre, Quaggan, Skritt, Nuhoch, Itzel, Exalted, Awaken, Dwarves, Mursaat, Seers, Centaurs, and Krait, don't really work as playable races. Tengu are probably the best option for a new playable race. Kodan and Largos would be awesome, but then you have to find a way around the Kodan Combat Tonic and the Largos Wings Backpiece.
Hello and welcome to the game o/. Race is flavor only, changing some parts of the story and dialogues. Most racial skills are useless, and this is by design. Some racial skills are useful at endgame, because the good skills were nerfed, but it should change soon. You can create a good thief with any race you want, so no worries.

There are skritts (rat people), hyleks (frogs), tengus (birds), grawls (they kind of look like monkeys), ogres, quaggans (the fish folks) and some other minor races. So if there were candidates, that would be those.
At the end of the day, almost all my class wind up being a male human. Human because developers design outfits specifically for humanoid classes so fewer clipping issues. Female Norn Warrior master race. Not sure about armor, because I play human female, but aesthetically, charr, norn, human male, and sylvari seem very fitting in my head.

Sylvari turret as friendly to blink to with merciful intervention (guard) or technobubble (asura) as additional cc on classes that might lack cc otherwise, just to name the first 2 that come in mind.
